This was a very fun task where we listed a few occupations, and then went on to choose a film genre. And so I came up with a 'Homeless Romantic'.
Before creating the character we had to come up with a story:
A sucker for love, each time a beautiful woman walks by handing him some change or food, he falls in love. When he eventually collects enough money he buys a bunch of flowers and hands one out to each woman who walks buy, hoping that one day someone will return his love. Getting use to the rejection of all the women, he eventually gives up when a woman laughs in his face and throws the flower in the bin. And so, as the homeless romantic is about to give up on love forever a small dog comes along running over to the homeless romantic jumping with excitement and licking his face. Instead of love, the homeless romantic has found a true friend, and they both live happily ever after on the streets.
This is a slightly odd story, however I liked the idea of creating a character with a kind heart, considering his circumstances. And so I went on to try out some character designs.

Here is my character for the 'Homeless Romantic'. I am happy with the character however he doesn't give off a kind hearted look, therefore I tried creating friendlier eyes which improved him slightly. This is only my first attempt at character designing, next week we will be going back to basics on creating characters.
I have also recently bought a Wacom tablet to try out character designing in a digital format.
Here are the results:
